FASHION
Sometimes you don't know where to begin when it comes to Carrie's fashion...and that's the beauty of it. Carrie's fashion IS about FASHION. She's on trend yet always pushing the envelope almost creating a new genre of style with every outfit choice. It doesn't matter if you're saying, "I would never wear that", or "I would never think to wear that", she's got you talking about new ideas and inspiring your next style move.

Can you let go of your fashion inhibitions and get "Carrie'd Away"? The ONE rule to doing so is to throw all the rules away. Here are some ways you can be as inspiring as Carrie is:

  • The rule "If you haven't worn it in a year, throw it out" does NOT apply - Revisit some of your old duds (as long as they still fit). Throw some key words describing the clothing items in question into a google search and see the places you can go. (I.E. "How to update stone washed mom jeans")You'll be amazed by what you already have going on in your clothing collection with pieces you thought had no chance of revival. Once you start recycling oldies in new ways you'll be hooked.
  • The rule "Don't mix prints/fabrics" is CRAZY-talk, not CARRIE-talk - To get comfortable mixing and matching, start pairing items that seem contrasting but maybe have SOMETHING in common...like a navy and white striped top with a navy and red polka-dotted jacket or scarf or a red flannel shirt wrapped with a blue flannel sash.
  • The rule "Don't be photographed in it twice", is for the unimaginative - I once wore a dress to my work Christmas party that I later cut in half and dawned parts of a second and third time in front of the same coworkers who had no idea they were complimenting on and asking me where they could get a total repeat! Changing out, or adding buttons is a great trick. A pair of scissors can transform an old frock into a one-of-a-kind by creating cut-outs or slits.
  • The rule "Don't wear a top as a dress"...that's just prudish! - Pencil skirts are all the rage, but who says you have to go buy a pencil skirt to be on trend? Got an old tube top? Especially a faded, moth-eaten one you were a spill away from using as a rag? You know what to do with it now! Or turn a scarf into a vest by placing it on your neck just like you would if you were about to tie it like a man's tie, but instead knot it or make a bow at the small of your back.

  • The Rule "I'll Never Find That Outfit. It Was Worn in a television show." is Laziness - Check out the items I found to resemble Carrie's arrival-to-Paris, nautical-themed, outfit:
(Pair a chiffon white/navy polka dotted blouse, with a cardigan trimmed with nautical embellishments and finish off with the long white/navy striped skirt.)

HOME
Carrie openly struggled with a living space issue on SATC due to an evergrowing clothing collection and no desire to curb her shopping addiction. Therefore good closet organization and clever space-saving techniques were vital to her existence.

  • Making walls out of nothing at all - Carrie's closet resembled a walk-in but was really just the hallway leading from her bedroom to the master bath. In fact, anyone with a hallway not designated as a firescape route can re-create her clothes haven by installing racks on either side and optionally putting up curtains where there may be no door for privacy. This is a great way to keep your entire home from morphing into a giant mound of stuff if it wasn't originally built with a master closet...or two.

  • Overall H-YOU - Carrie's apartment decor matured throughout the show as did her style...as did her career...as did SHE. There was one obvious design element that did not change: One paint color covered most every wall. This was important again because it created the illusion of space where there wasn't much. A loft style home or rooms that connect with an open floor plan and without doors or doorways lend themselves to this design. Light and/or bright are winning themes when choosing a color that will make your home appear more spacious. You also don't have to worry about being stuck with a hue that is hard to cover if you change your mind or the time comes for another paint

  • Ruggish - Since Carrie doesn't create division between the open areas of her home with her universal paint color, she does add some complimenting rugs and they do the trick quite nicely. Think about which colors accentuate the paint you have on your walls and choose floor wear with this in mind.
